Keeping Projects on Track: The Role of Construction Administration

September 1, 2025

The permit is approved. The contractor is mobilized. Now what? For many engineering firms, the answer is: not much. For Frontier, construction administration is a core part of the service, not an afterthought.

What Construction Administration Includes

Shop Drawing Review: Before fabricated components are manufactured, submittals come through for engineering review. We check shop drawings of steel connections, precast elements, cold-formed framing layouts, and other fabricated items against the design intent. This is where coordination errors get caught before steel is cut or concrete is cast.

RFI Response: Conditions in the field rarely match the drawings exactly. Contractors submit Requests for Information when they encounter something unexpected or unclear. Responsive, accurate RFI answers keep the project moving and prevent guesswork from becoming structural risk.

Site Observation: Periodic site visits to observe work in progress (foundations before backfill, structural framing before it’s covered) give us the opportunity to verify that the work aligns with the design. These visits are not inspections in the code-compliance sense, but they are an important check.

Supplemental Sketches: When field conditions require a design response, we issue supplemental sketches promptly so contractors aren’t waiting on engineering to proceed.

Why It Matters

A well-designed structure can still be built poorly. Construction administration is the mechanism by which the engineer’s design intent gets preserved through the realities of construction. It’s also the period when unforeseen conditions such as unexpected existing structure, changed owner requirements, or site constraints require real-time engineering judgment.

Skipping CA saves money in the short run and often costs considerably more in the long run. We recommend it for every project we design.
