Mass Timber and Carbon Capture
Mass timber (including Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT), glulam, and nail-laminated timber) is one of the most exciting structural innovations of the past two decades. Beyond its structural performance, mass timber offers a compelling sustainability story: trees sequester carbon as they grow, and that carbon remains locked in the wood throughout the life of the structure.
A mass timber building doesn’t just avoid carbon emissions; it actively stores carbon. This makes it one of the few construction systems with a net-negative embodied carbon footprint when sourced responsibly.
Structural Capabilities
Modern mass timber panels can span large distances and support significant loads. CLT floors, roofs, and walls are increasingly being used in mid-rise and even high-rise construction, often in combination with concrete or steel cores for lateral resistance.
What We Do
Frontier Structural Engineering has experience designing and reviewing mass timber systems, including connection details, gravity systems, and lateral force-resisting elements. We work closely with architects to integrate exposed timber aesthetics with sound structural engineering.
