The Art and Engineering of Timber Framing
Timber framing is one of humanity’s oldest building traditions and one of its most enduring. Using large, carefully jointed timbers connected with wooden pegs and traditional joinery, timber frame structures have stood for centuries. Today, the craft is alive and well, supported by modern engineering analysis and precision fabrication.
Unlike conventional dimensional lumber framing, timber framing relies on large-section members (typically 6x6 and larger) carrying loads through a skeletal framework of posts and beams. The result is an open, flexible floor plan and a structure that speaks clearly of its own making.
Modern Applications
Contemporary timber framing often combines traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery with steel connectors and engineered lumber where needed. Computer-aided design and CNC fabrication have made complex frames more accessible and more precise than ever before.
Our Role
Frontier Structural Engineering provides engineering services for timber frame projects of all scales: from residential additions to large commercial halls. We evaluate member sizing, connection capacity, and lateral systems to ensure every frame performs safely and beautifully.
