Gripstone Climbing Gym is a destination for climbers across the Colorado Springs region, and this expansion project added significant new climbing wall area and updated the facility’s structural systems to support continued growth.

Climbing Wall Structural Demands

Climbing gyms present structural engineering challenges that most commercial occupancies don’t. The climbing walls themselves (whether bouldering walls, top-rope walls, or lead walls) impose concentrated anchor loads at unpredictable locations across their surface. Holds and anchor bolts can be repositioned regularly to change routes, meaning the structure behind the wall must be designed to accept point loads at essentially any location without requiring engineering review each time routes are reset.

The expansion framing was designed with this flexibility in mind: the structural system behind the new climbing wall surfaces was sized and spaced to accept the maximum anticipated anchor loads at any position, ensuring that the route-setting team could work freely without structural constraints.

Dynamic Load Considerations

Climbers falling and being caught by ropes impose dynamic impact loads on the anchor system that exceed the static weight of the climber by a significant factor. The structural anchorage was designed for these dynamic demands, using appropriate impact factors to ensure the connections remain safe under worst-case fall arrest scenarios.

Expansion Framing

New wall framing, floor structure at elevated bouldering features, and roof connections were coordinated with the facility’s existing structure to ensure the expansion integrated cleanly. The project required careful attention to the interface between new and existing framing to maintain load path continuity without requiring significant modification to the original building structure.
