Construction Administration
The Engineer’s Role Does Not End at Permit
A building permit marks the beginning of construction, not the end of the structural engineer’s responsibility. Frontier Structural Engineering provides comprehensive construction administration services to ensure that what was designed is what gets built.
Errors caught during shop drawing review or addressed promptly through an RFI response are far less costly than errors discovered during inspection or after occupancy. Our construction administration services protect the owner, the contractor, and the design team.
Shop Drawing and Submittal Review
Fabricators and suppliers produce shop drawings that translate the engineer’s design intent into specific manufactured products. Frontier reviews structural steel shop drawings, concrete reinforcement submittals, pre-engineered wood member layouts, anchor bolt plans, and connection details to confirm conformance with the structural drawings and specifications.
We return marked-up submittals with clear action items and coordinate with the fabricator or supplier to resolve discrepancies before material is ordered or fabricated.
Request for Information (RFI) Response
Field conditions rarely match the drawings exactly. Unforeseen subsurface conditions, material substitutions, sequencing changes, and dimensional conflicts all generate RFIs that require timely engineering input. Frontier responds to structural RFIs promptly, with clear written direction that protects all parties and keeps the project moving.
Structural Observations and Site Visits
Frontier performs periodic structural observations at critical construction milestones: reinforcing placement before concrete pours, anchor bolt setting and grouting, steel erection and connection inspection, and shear wall nailing verification. We document observations in writing and provide the contractor with a clear record of any required corrections.
Structural observation is not the same as special inspection, but it is an important quality assurance step that protects the owner’s investment.
Structural Letters and Field Directives
When a contractor needs a structural letter confirming member capacity, authorizing a field modification, or documenting an engineering decision made during construction, Frontier prepares clear, professionally stamped correspondence that satisfies the building department, the general contractor, and the project owner.
Add Frontier to Your Project Team
Construction administration is most effective when the same engineer who designed the structure provides CA services. Call 719 247-2928 to discuss adding Frontier to your project’s construction phase scope.
Ready to Talk Through Your Project?
Structural problems found in the field cost two to five times what they would have cost to solve on paper. Tell us about your project — scope, location, timeline, team — and we'll respond quickly with how we can help.
